DAPping

iPod love or hate? Every major city in the world is filled with the blessed things, but Dubai remains an Apple free zone? Is it the price? Maybe it's because the style thing is not that important? Or maybe that we all travel in cars and have radios and things...

The people who could really use an iPod - bus travellers - can't of course afford them.

Price really is an issue, though not so much for the ipod as for other Apple products. I've been an avid Apple buyer since 1995, but I rather wait for a once a year trip to the US than pay the 40% to 60% premium here. "Apple is expensive" is no longer true wherever real Apple stores are available. There's real value for what you buy, but not in the UAE. Both high prices and bad service, especially from ABM who are starting to open Apple stores in the malls here, do nothing but keep the UAE an Apple-free zone, as opposed to an Apple freezone.

Just yesterday I was looking for a Mac related software product--in US shops or online $80 (Dhs 293), local price Dhs 450--and you'd have to wait for the company to order it from somewhere.

But if you don't have the luxury of travelling to the US or other distant post that offers Apple products--the Pro Tech Apple shop on SZRoad is better than the ABM outlet in IbnBatuta, for service that is.
